Ithaca, NY (WENY) – Cold Weather is the ideal temperature to have when showcasing ice sculptures. Thursday's weather provided snow flurries and chilly temperatures for the 12th annual Ithaca Ice Festival.
The three day event kicked off Thursday evening with an impressive display of ice sculptures and an ice bar that serves Bacchus Beer, Treleaven Wine and Hot Cocoa.
The downtown commons area is decorated and ready for the holiday. Thursday a stage was set up for DJ Ha-Meen to spin some tunes as people enjoying the Ice bar sported headphones provided for silent disco.
“This event is a way that we benefit the downtown community and invite people to come down, patronize our local restaurants and do their shopping downtown, said Summer Keown. Tomorrow we have our first ice carving competition from 5 to 9pm on the Bernie Milton pavilion. Each Ice sculptor will have 20 minutes to make the best ice sculpture that they can make.
On Saturday ice sculptors will participate in an even bigger competition. The sculptors will have all day to make the best ice sculpture they can make. The event will also have their famous chowder cook off with 25 restaurants providing their best chowder.
