First Responders Rescue Dog From Gorge Sunday Evening

Posted: Updated:

Varna, N.Y. (WENY)-- First responders in Tompkins County saved a dog Sunday evening after it fell down an embankment and into a gorge off Monkey Run Trail.

Around 4:30pm, the dog's owner called 911 to report his dog had fallen off a cliff on a hiking trail. The dog had fallen about 50 feet down a steep embankment at an area known as the Varna Cliffs. The Varna Fire Department was first called to the scene, but because of the dangerous position the dog was in, crews called for the Ithaca Fire Department's High Angle Rope Rescue team.

Crews set up a rope system at the top of the cliffs, and one rescuer rappelled down and secured the dog in the harness. The firefighters then hauled the rescuer and the dog to safety. The dog, named "Finn," was then taken to Cornell Animal Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

First responders remind the public to be careful walking the trails, especially in the winter.
