ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Tonight at city hall, a dedicated group of young men and women were inducted into the 2019 Elmira City Youth Court. As described by the City of Elmira, Youth Court is an alternate way to go about due process, regarding the criminal justice system for young people who have committed crimes in the area.
The goal of the initiative is to address early delinquent and criminal behavior amongst young people, and to prevent future criminal activity. After tonight's ceremony I spoke with Lisa Miller, who coordinates the City Youth Court, and she said, "When youths do something wrong, it's to right their wrongs as well, without having a criminal history or going to family court. This is a good diversion program, and that's exactly what we are. A good diversion program."
Going forward this year, these students will make up a mock jury who will judge their peers that have commit offenses, instead of an actual court judge.
