CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- With the Finger Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross' new building now complete here outside of Corning, the non-profit organization is seeking more volunteer help going throughout the year.
When it comes to serving your community in a variety of ways, the American Red Cross might be a good place to start. With everything finalized at their new location in East Corning, our local Red Cross is now looking to recruit more volunteers. There are several positions with the Finger Lakes Chapter that require assistance from the public, whether you have medical training or not.
During their open house today, Finger Lakes American Red Cross Executive Director Brian McConnell told me, "There aren't necessarily any prerequisites. A lot of the training that we require, we will provide. The ability to have a valid driver's license to drive long distances is part of it, especially for disaster response. Also, for some of the bio-med transportation work. Other than that individuals should consider joining and we will provide the training."
One of the biggest needs right now is for volunteers that will assist the Bath VA, working with area veterans and active military. They only request, that you bring at least one skill to the table. I also spoke with Linda Conway, the Finger Lakes Red Cross Service to Armed Forces Chairperson, and she said, "The skill really is to like working with veterans and active military, along with their families."
"Our biggest focus right now is Vietnam Veterans, because they were not appreciated as much during the time they came back from war. We are in the process of recognizing them and thanking them for their service."
