CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) – A Corning man was arrested following an animal cruelty investigation in the city.

Corning Police say on February 4, 55-year-old Thomas Savino contacted the police, saying he had been bitten by a dog on Baker Street Extension in Corning

However, on February 6, a citizen reported to Corning Police that Savino was seen attacking a different dog that was fenced in its owner's Groton Street backyard.

Savino allegedly rushed the dog and aggressively threw a dangerous object – possibly a rock – at the dog.

During the course of the investigation into the complaint, police say Savino may have been involved in a prior incident that happened in January in which he allegedly attacked another dog. This complaint is still being investigated and police say more charges are possible.

On Thursday, police spoke with Savino after information had been obtained that he was preparing to leave town. Savino was subsequently arrested and charged with one count of Attempted Aggravated Cruelty to Animals.

Police say the charge is because Savino attempted to cause serious injury to the dog, but was unsuccessful.

Savino was released on his own recognizance and will appear in Corning City Court at a later date.
