ELMIRA, N.Y.(WENY)-- After months of planning, a community of people gathered in Eldridge park at 10:00 a.m. this morning to create the worlds largest human shamrock. The idea for this record breaking attempt stemmed from a local meteorologist.

"When I brought this idea to them, I didn't see it happening right away but the wheels just got in motion and once everything started it all really just came together, they really like the idea. It got so many likes and shares on social media, just everyone in this area just really came out and it's just amazing. I'm so impressed by the turnout today," says Anthony Chiavaroli, Human Shamrock Organizer.

People from all over joined in this mornings activity came from all over the Southern Tier.

"I retired and I made a list of things I would like to do while I'm retired and one of them was to try to figure out how to be apart of the Guinness world book of records and when this opportunity came up I jumped on it," says Barbara Gray, Resident of Schuyler County.

Achieving a world record for many is a once in a life time opportunity and one such as this really brought the community together.

"It's just something that you would never think you would be apart of and the Guinness book of world records is you know, renowned all over the world and so to be a part of something. It's kind of awesome especially to have a community when you know getting here earlier, there were not a whole lot of people and to have over 1,200 people actually showing up was just phenomenal. Ya, it's awesome, it's an awesome feeling," says Marian Chiavaroli, Resident of Elysburg Pennsylvania.

Some members such as Anthony hope that this might become a new tradition here in the Southern Tier. He said that he hopes they can try to break their own record next year with possibly 2,000 people. Today's turn out was larger than 1,200 but there was only that many ponchos. So members hope that if they attempt this again next year that they will be able to order even more ponchos and get their number even higher.
