WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WENY) -- After all of their events were canceled this summer, the staff at Watkins Glen International was excited to learn they were finally going to be able to welcome fans back to the track in a safe, socially distant way. "Victory Laps" Weekend at WGI was created to support the R.A.C.E. Foundation while also giving fans the opportunity to take a couple of laps around the famous WGI road coarse.

"As our season was sort of rolling along and certain events were getting postponed or canceled, we still wanted to find a way to do something at the track to host fans," says Michael Gardner, Public Relations Manger for Watkins Glen International. "Its just a great way for us to give something back to the dedicated fans of our track because I know they have definitely been through a lot, we certainly have at the track. For three days its a chance for anyone to drive their personal car vehicle, $25 and it goes to our R.A.C.E Foundation."

Every dollar will go towards the R.A.C.E. Foundationwhich will help local charities, food providers, and more. Fans are encouraged to buy advance sale tickets to the event to help the lines keep moving along.

WENY News was able to catch up with a fan who drove in from Rochester New York for the day just to be able to take a couple of laps on the famous race track.

"I just want to keep doing it over and over again, I’m playing hooky from work so I want eight hours of this. But the curves are great and they really kind of pin you to the side," says Henry Kron from Rochester New York. "For like a few minutes or a few seconds you feel like you really are a race car person."

"Victory Laps" weekend started on Friday, September 25 and will throughout the weekend on both Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 pm.
