ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) - An inmate in the Chemung County Jail died after reportedly overdosing on narcotics.

According to the Chemung County Sheriff's Office, it happened Tuesday morning. The Sheriff's Office says correctional staff were conducting a housing unit search when Leo Disbrow, 35,  allegedly swallowed an illegal narcotic contraband. Officers reportedly did not know the inmate had allegedly swallowed the drugs.

The Sheriff's Office says Disbrow started showing overdose symptoms a short time later. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Disbrow was jailed on February 23rd. The Sheriff's Office says their preliminary investigation shows he snuck the narcotics into the jail by hiding the contraband in his anus. The Sheriff's Office referred to this technique as "boofing."

The Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division is investigating. That investigating is ongoing.
