HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- It's been about one year since the Horseheads community overwhelmingly approved what was then known as the Horseheads 2030 plan. Now called "Building our Future Now," the nearly $100 million capital improvement project aims to upgrade all aspects of the district.

"Over the past year, we've come to the finalization that we're ready to go," says District Superintendent Dr. Thomas Douglas. "Our new vision is explore, empower and excel. We're looking at that with a new curriculum and then in addition, we need an infrastructure to support that curriculum enhancement."

Since the projects approval, administration has been hard at work finalizing design plans. For example, the high school's library will be entirely re-done, as will the school's main entrance in hopes of improving student traffic flow and upping security.

"We're looking primarily at a lot of safety and security [changes]," says Douglas. "[We're also] renovating our classrooms that are traditionally undersized at this time but appropriately sized fifty [to] sixty years ago."

Douglas says a large portion of those security upgrades will come with changes in technology.

Estimates for the project are currently coming in under budget.
The district will soon await final approval before looking to start construction next year.
