CAMPBELL, N.Y. (WENY) -- Earlier this evening, the Campbell Town Board approved a zoning measure that would allow an eventual 20 acre expansion of Hakes Landfill.

According to area residents, some of them have expressed concerns to the board due to environmental concerns, but those concerns were dismissed after the board unanimously passed the zoning decision.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation still has to grant approval for the expansion, and for people who live nearby, that will give them a little extra time to have their voices heard during the NYSDEC's decision window.

After the decision was made one of the concerned residents, Marcia Weber, told me,"We're concerned there is evidence of radon and radiation that is not being taken into account in the discussion. It has been dismissed, and there are scientists that feel that it is worth taking a harder look at. So, we are disappointed about that."

Again, this expansion has to be approved by the DEC, and we'll bring you updates as the story moves forward.
