Local communities join forces in bulk electric program to help save money for residents
CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. (WENY) -- Nearly two dozen municipalities in the region are joining forces to purchase electricity through the Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) Program.
The City of Elmira, Village of Elmira Heights and the Village of Horseheads are among the 21 communities which will be offering competitive, fixed price electricity to their residents and small businesses. The CCA Program is run through the Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance (MEGA). It will provide eligible participants with renewable energy options and price stability.
Here's how it works: CCA Programs focus on the source of the price of the electric supply while relying on local utility for delivery service and physical infrastructure. MEGA awarded the supply contract to Constellation, an Exelon company, which has more than a decade of experience serving CCA Programs.
If you live or own a small business in the City of Elmira or the Town of Horseheads, you'll be able to pay a fully fixed price of $0.05092.kWh for 24 months, beginning July 2019. The CCA price is lower than the local utility's average supply price for the previous year.
Also in July 2019, residents in the Villages of Elmira Heights and Horseheads will now have access to 100% renewable electricity, also at a fully fixed price of $0.05420/kWh for 24 months.
Those who are automatically eligible to participate in the CCA Program can expect to see a letter come mid-May. If you don't want to join, you can simply opt out with no repercussions. This can be done via mail, phone, or online. Participants in the CCA Program can also opt-out of the program at any time during the 24 month period, again, without any penalty.
Additionally, residents and small businesses with a supplier other than the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) can participate in the CCA Program by opting-in. The Program is compatible with budget billing, community solar and rooftop solar.
