HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) -- On Saturday, May 11 letter carriers across the country will be collecting canned good and other non-perishable items for the 27th Annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive.

It's a nation-wide event sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers.

Community members are asked to leave non-perishable food items in a bag or box next to their mailbox, early Saturday morning.  Your local letter carrier will pick it up when they make their rounds.

The food will be donated to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier

The organization is in need of canned fruits and vegetables, peanut butter, dry pastas and canned soups, among other things.

Last year, the Food Bank received more than 7,600 pounds of food from Stamp Out Hunger, which equates to more than 6,300 meals.
