Elmira, N.Y. (WENY)-- Volunteers in the Elmira community came together Saturday to help spruce up the downtown area.

Volunteers gathered at Wisner park and from there, they were divided up into groups and sent out to various parks, streets, and sidewalks in the 52 block downtown area. Rakes, brooms, garbage bags, and gloves were provided.

"I just think that it shows how important all of this is to everything that's happening in the city....it's people that come out and care and want to see Elmira in a better place," said Jennifer Herrick, Executive Director for Elmira Downtown Development.

The clean up efforts began at 10:00 a.m and lasted until 12:00 p.m. All volunteers were then invited to go back to Wisner Park for a pizza party donated by Tops Friendly Markets. Drinks were also provided by Culligan and Pepsi Co. All volunteers also received a t-shirt.
