ELMIRA, N.Y.(WENY)--  Sunday morning, streets were shut down and blocked off for the annual Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure in Downtown Elmira. Over 2,000 people were in attendance between participants and volunteers who came out to show their support. This annual event is a big deal for many in the region because many have been touched by breast cancer or have had someone in their family or friend group effected by it. The day started at 7 a.m. with registrations and warm ups before the official race took place. Afterward was a fun run for the kids who also wanted to participate in the event! The overall goal was to turn Elmira pink for part of the day to raise awareness and raise money for locals in the region who are going through treatments or using services for breast cancer. Some of the people in attendance were there just to show their support and help raise money for this cause, but some were there to celebrate. Ceci Wilson attended Sunday's event to not only be with her friend who is celebrating 28 years of being cancer free, but to also celebrate her own personal one year anniversary of being breast cancer free.

"It's just amazing, I've always known about it and everything but being that this is my one year, I was like I need to start doing this. It just lifts you up and makes you keep wanting to fight and to be survivors and to just keep going," says Cecilia Wilson, Breast Cancer Survivor.

All of the proceeds raised at the event benefit local grantees in the region for breast cancer services and programs to help them beat this disease. You can click here for more about the Susan G. Komen foundation, upcoming events, and to donate to the cause.
