Police investigating after attempted home invasion, shots fired incident
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Elmira Police Department is asking for the public's help after a reported home invasion and shots fired incident. According to EPD, on Saturday, June 15th shortly after 1:00 a.m., officers responded to the 700 block of Holdridge Street for a report of a gunshot and an attempted home invasion.
EPD says the resident told them he was asleep on the couch with a small child when he was woken up by the sound of someone trying to break down the front door. He sent the child upstairs and then opened the front door. That's when he observed a subject pointing a handgun at his face. He shut the door on the subject and in return, the subject fired one round through the door.
EPD says officers observed damage to the front door, as if someone attempted to kick it in. Additionally, a single bullet hole in the door and a spent shell casing were located outside of the residence. According to EPD, the round went through the door and into a television. There were two small children inside at the time of the incident.
The situation is currently under investigation at this time. Anyone with any information is asked to contact EPD at 607-737-5626 or leave a message on the anonymous tip line at 607-271-HALT.
