NICHOLS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The New York Gaming Commission voted in June to officially allow sports betting to take place in upstate casinos. The state's first legal sports bets were placed as of Tuesday, July 16th.

Tioga Downs Casino is one of four in New York state to be approved for sports betting.

Friday afternoon, FanDuel Group announced its grand opening of the first sportsbook in the state. Officials say that this will have a very positive impact on the state's revenue, and will also be a fun sports atmosphere for the community to enjoy games at.

Assemblywoman, Donna Lupardo, placed the first bet at the casino to celebrate the opening. She says she's excited to see all that this will bring to the state, and that this is only the beginning for sports betting.

"People across the country and certainly in New York State have been spending billions of dollars placing illegal bets. That doesn't go away, but by capturing that money right here while bringing people to Tioga Downs, personally is significant. They will then enjoy the casino, enjoy the hotel, maybe go up to the Fingerlakes, come down into Binghamton and enjoy a game. It's a win all around," says Donna Lupardo, Assemblywoman.

By bringing this betting lounge to Tioga Downs, officials say that they're expecting this to bring more people to the casino and tourists to the area.
