NYS motorized boater safety course requirement signed into law
ALBANY, N.Y. (WENY) -- All boaters who will operate a motorized boat or watercraft will be required to take a state approved safety course by 2025.
Governor Cuomo signed "Brianna's Law" into the books to help strengthen boater safety. The law was named after Brianna Lieneck, an 11-year-old girl killed in a 2005 boating accident.
When the requirement is fully phased in, all operators of motorized boats or crafts will be required to complete a state approved boating safety course. Governor Cuomo says the safety course will be offered online, and a certificate will be generated immediately after passing the course.
Governor Cuomo talked about the new law, saying "It's a precedent for the country. We are proud of it. It's leading the way and it is the right thing to do. You know that it is the right thing, and you know it is common sense because, even in this hyper-political environment, it is bipartisan."
