Local church holds silent candlelight vigil
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- With the increase in mass shootings our country has seen, a local church in Elmira says "enough is enough."
Park Church held a candlelight vigil tonight, to raise awareness about any and all violence. President of Church Counsel says it's important to the church as a whole to keep this act of hate in the eye of the public, and for the community to be aware of their surroundings at all times.
Members of the church tell WENY news that they hope this will bring peace to the community.
"Well I think we're in an era that there's a lot of anger and fear in our nation, that drives violence. I think violence is just kind of perpetuated by people's concerns and worries. Coming out and just doing a silent, peaceful vigil and lighting candles to just say there's a more peaceful way to resolve things through communication and understanding other people's points of view," says Martha Benedict, a member of Park Church.
About 50 community members attended tonight's vigil to show their support for the recent victims and families affected by the mass shootings.
