Elmira Boys Soccer Seeks Redemption
ELMIRA, NY (WENY) - A very strong season from the Elmira Express boys soccer team ended in disappointment in 2018.
After topping out at #3 in the NYSSWA rankings, the Express lost 4 of their last 6 games to finish at 10-4-3. That includes a loss to Vestal in the STAC final, and a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in overtime to rival Horseheads in the Section IV Class AA semi-final. Elmira entered the game as the top seed, while the Blue Raiders were the 4 seed. The end of the season has not escaped the minds of the Express. Head Coach Derek Hamilton says, "I think our youth got the best of us at the end of the season last year and we weren't playing our best soccer at the end. That loss in the section semis, that's kind of left a sour taste in our mouth and has left guys wanting more coming into this season. Our expectations are high, to advance by that game and as far as we can go at that point is just a bonus."
Senior striker Noah Sperduto says the upperclassmen have been fueled by last year's semi-final loss. He says, "I mean after experiencing that, a lot of the guys that took part in that were seniors, we know what it's like to lose and it makes us work even harder this year to try to win."
The Express host Horseheads to begin their season on Friday at 4:00 PM.
