ITHACA, N.Y.(WENY)-- The Ithaca Tompkins Regional Airport has been under construction for almost a year now, but airport day is just about two weeks away and the staff is excited to show their community what progress they have made so far.

“We are in a very exciting time for the airport. Two weeks from now we're going to begin moving the airlines back into their new counter space and people will start to be able to re-enter the terminal the way they used to, well not exactly. We got a new entrance in that same general area,” says Michael Hall, Airport Director at the Ithaca Tompkins County Regional Airport.

Airport Crews are working diligently to make sure they are able to present some of their new areas on Airport day and also have the airport ready for travelers before the holiday season. Along with tours of the new facilities with numerous activities on airport day, there will also be a 5k like no other at 9 a.m. September 14th.

“But what that means is for example is we have people pushing people in wheelchairs, we have people running with their dogs, there's little kids in strollers. It's just a lot of fun. If you can finish the 5k in an hour, which is the time we're able to close the runway for, then come on out and see the airport from a very different point of view,” says Hall.

If you're from the Tompkins County area or would just like to see the new facilities, Director Hall says all are welcome to come and even join in on the 5K. All of the proceeds from the 5K will be donated to the SPCA of Tompkins County and there will be prizes for those who qualify first.

“I just hope that people will come out and have fun, we'll hope for good weather and enjoy a day seeing your home town airport,” says Hall.
