Seneca Indians to Lean on Speed in 2019
WATKINS GLEN, NY (WENY) - Football finally returns to the Southern Tier on Friday night. When the Seneca Indians begin their season, they hope they can build off of their success from last year with a new style of play.
The combined forces of Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour finished last year's regular season with a 4-4 record, clinching a playoff berth in Class C. The Indians were knocked out in the semi-final round by Susquehanna Valley 56-6. Seneca will begin their season on the road against Susquehanna Valley on Friday at 7:00 pm.
The team lost some size up front, but believe a new style of play will be just as successful. Head Coach Trevor Holland says, "We're going to be very athletic. We lost a lot of our size from last year. We had a lot of great, big size guys that worked a lot in the weight room. They're gonna look at us and say 'hey, they look small.' But we're going to be a little faster too. We've got a a lot of skill players, and guys that are going to put their all into it."
Senior Quarterback Derrick Lewis is excited for the change in pace. He says, "We switched from power last year to speed with some newer guys. It's a little bit different, but it's a good different. We're ready to go and the speed is going to help us a lot with the new style of offense."
