ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – October is domestic violence awareness month. To raise awareness, an event it set to be held at Wisner Park in Elmira later today. It will run from 5:30 to 7:00 tonight.

This event is being held to remember those who have lost their life due to domestic violence and to honor survivors. Event organizers also want to educate the public on signs to look out for and effects of domestic violence on adults and children.

All who attend are asked to wear purple, which is the color of domestic violence awareness. T-shirts will be available for purchase. There will be vendors, face painting, food and refreshments.

A candle light ceremony will also be held at 6:00 tonight. Today's event is free admission.
