ELMIRA, NY (WENY) - It was the high school football game of the weekend and perhaps the year across the Twin Tiers as Corning and Elmira clashed on Saturday for the top spot in the Section IV AA playoffs next weekend.

The game turned out to be a hard-fought defensive battle as the Hawks claimed that top spot, squeaking past the Express, 8-0. It was Corning Running Back Max Freeman who punched it in from the 2-yard line in the 2nd quarter after the Hawks had recovered an Elmira fumble in their own territory that made the difference.

Corning finishes the regular season 7-1 overall and unbeaten in divisional play, while Elmira finishes at 6-2 overall with 1 divisional loss and will be the 2 seed in the Sectional Tournament right behind Corning, so it is possible that these two could meet again down the line for some hardware.

After the game, WENY spoke with Corning Head Coach George Bacalles and Senior, Seth Hogue.

"I'm proud of our kids" said Bacalles. "This has been a place where we haven't had a lot of success in a long time so to come out here and win a tough battle especially on the defensive side was exactly what we thought it was going to be."

"I think we had to not be afraid at all" said Hogue. "When you go against a double-wing offense, it's daunting. They run the ball down your throat and I think we played physical and we really showed that we could stop that and it was awesome."

The Section IV Playoffs are set to begin Friday and Saturday, November 1st and 2nd.
