ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) – As we get ready to go from the Fall season to the winter, Catholic Charities of Chemung and Schuyler counties is committed to fighting the effects of poverty.

The organization has already housed 447 people in 2019. Staff say that they saw a huge spike this summer. Last year 465 were temporarily housed. Staff say they're expecting another spike since the cold weather is just around the corner.

In addition to housing individuals in need, Catholic Charities offers several services in the community, working to ensure people have food, clothing, shelter and medical services available to them.

The organization could use the communities help with donations.

“We could really use additional items for Thanksgiving. Care packages for people etc. If people are willing to donate towards that, we would love the assistance.

Some of those items include coats, hats, gloves and winter boots. Catholic Charities says people can also adopt a family for Christmas to purchase things like clothes and toys for the kids, cleaning supplies, pots, pans, etc.
