HORSEHEADS, NY (WENY) - Horseheads and Elmira have squared off in two Section IV Class AA Semi-finals, with the Express winning in girls soccer, and the Blue Raiders winning in boys soccer. There's still one more semi-final matchup to go, with the Horseheads football team looking to exact revenge against Elmira.

The Blue Raiders finished the season with a record of 6-2, the same record as the Express. Elmira holds a one game edge in conference play. One of Horseheads' two losses on the season came at the hands of the Express, a 34-28 defeat. The Blue Raiders now if they subtract some of their mistakes, that game could have been a win. Senior running back Gavin Elston says, "We went in up by a touchdown at half. Came out and made a couple mistakes. We know this time if we clean up some of those mistakes we'll be perfectly fine."

These two teams met last year in the Section IV Class AA title game, with Elmira winning their second straight section title 30-6. That loss, and the nature of the rivalry between the two schools, adds even more to this semi-final matchup for the Blue Raiders. Head Coach Kevin Hillman says, "I do think, you know, when you play Elmira and Horseheads, these two teams, there's that rivalry there. Everyone does get up a little bit more when it's Elmira or Corning, the area teams. I do think there's more motivation in that being so close to each other. It also makes it more exciting and fun to play."

Senior quarterback Grayson Woodhouse hasn't forgotten last year's championship loss. He says, "Definitely want to win this one after last year. Can't stop thinking about getting eliminated. That also adds motivation."

The Express host Horseheads on Saturday at 1:30 PM.
