Schrom defeats Laurey to become Chemung County Sheriff-Elect
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Acting Sheriff for Chemung County is now the Sheriff-Elect after Tuesday's special election for the top cop spot.
In the race for the position, Schrom was up against former Chemung County corrections officer, Art Laurey. The Sheriff-Elect brought in a little over 81% of the vote. Schrom served as the Undersheriff for Chemung County under the leadership of former Sheriff, Chris Moss. When Moss was elected as the Chemung County Executive last year, Schrom moved into the Acting Sheriff role. Schrom says he's excited to serve the residents of Chemung County.
"I've been a part of this agency for 30 years," said Schrom. "Part of an organization that's 183 years old. The tradition and the history involved in that, and being a part of that and having the ability to guide and impact the direction moving forward, that's pretty cool."
Schrom went on to say he looks forward to working with area law enforcement to help combat local drug issues and violent crimes.
