IPD: Officer assaulted by teen, suffers broken nose
ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) -- An Ithaca Police officer is recovering after being assaulted on the job -- allegedly by a teenager on the way to the hospital.
Ithaca Police say officers responded to reports of a suicidal teen on the 600 block of Chestnut Street on Tuesday night. The 15-year-old girl was taken into custody under the mental health hygiene law because police say it was determined that she was a danger to herself. After being escorted by officers to an ambulance, that's when the girl allegedly slammed her head into an officer's face, breaking the officer's nose.
According to a press release from police, the immediate family of the teen girl commented on how IPD officers maintained their composure and remained professional, despite the injury and heavy bleeding.
The officer was treated and released at Cayuga Medical Center. The girl, who was not identified, was charged with 2nd degree assault.
