ELM Airport prepares for holiday travel
BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WENY) - Thanksgiving is considered one of the busiest travel holidays of the year.
Millions of Americans plan on hitting the road or catching a flight. According to a CNN article from 2018, "A record of 30.6 million passengers will travel on US airlines during the Thanksgiving holiday." The Elmira Corning Regional Airport says because of this, they have been preparing and have some tips for those who plan on traveling this holiday season.
"One of the things we really encourage folks to do, especially on the Allegiant flights, but really all of them, is make sure that you get through the screening process quickly. So make sure that you have all the metal out of your pockets, have your boarding pass ready to go, and your photo ID ready to go," says Tom Freeman, the Director of Aviation for the Elmira Corning Regional Airport.
The airport's new parking lot is also now open. According to Freeman, the new parking lot holds 175 cars, adding about a 25 percent capacity to the 650 car lot that the airport already has, which is long-term and short-term.
"TSA recently opened up a TSA PreCheck, which is a real nice addition. So if you have TSA PreCheck there's a separate lane that you can get through and a little bit of expedited screening," says Freeman.
Freeman says because of this, you're able to keep your shoes on and go through the metal detectors rather than the scanners, making the process a little quicker. Allegiant Air is also adding a new flight starting next week to Punta Gorda, Florida. The Airport encourages anyone who plans on flying this holiday season to get to the airport two hours before their flight.
