Shabach Tabernacle hosts annual community thanksgiving dinner
ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- This year the Shabach Tabernacle is serving up their 12th annual free Thanksgiving meal for the community. Dinner was served from 11AM until 4PM at the church on Lake Street in Elmira. Serving up the holiday favorites like turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and even desserts. With all the food coming from community donations.
"Without the donations the stains on the pockets of the people that are here in this congregation would be enormous," said Shabach Tabernacle founding member, Chimene Taylor. "Probably more than they could do. So the donations are really, really important and we take them year-round."
They not only serve up dinner, but they deliver them to those in need too.
"There are people that are alone, people who are in wheelchairs, people that are elderly that don't have transportation," said Taylor. "People that maybe just don't want to cook for one person. It's really nice to know that while everybody else is at the party that the ones that couldn't make it to the party aren't forgotten."
It takes them three days to cook the meal to serve at least 200 people. But for the organizer of the meal, her favorite part is being able to help those in need.
"I love it," said meal organizer, Vera Wood. "I've been doing it for 8 years now. I love feeding the community and talking with the people. I enjoy it."
At the end of the day, organizers at the church say they just hope people leave the dinner with full bellies.
