Community college enrollment declines nationally, especially in N.Y.

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (WENY) -- Enrollments at most community colleges nationally aree declining, and that trend is not leaving New York untouched.
At Clinton Community in the North Country, the student body has plummeted 45 percent over the last decade.
The Albany Times Union now reports that the college is awaiting approval of a federal program that will allow inmates at nearby Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora to take courses remotely.
This could set a precedent for other community colleges struggling throughout the state.
Tompkins-Cortland was one five New York Community Colleges that lost more than a third of their student over the past several years.
Among the reasons for the decline: with unemployment low, fewer people ar looking for job training. And a decline in birth rates means there are fewer high school graduates.
