Pattern Change Ahead

Finally, our pattern will be changing across the Twin Tiers at the end of this week. We will be entering a weather pattern that will become favorable warmer weather and Spring-like weather. Over the past month, our atmosphere has been stuck in a cooler pattern for the Eastern US and that is all thanks to upstream blocking. Upstream atmospheric blocking near Greenland hasn't allowed the pattern to progress, and instead it has been cycling cooler air into the Eastern US which also contributed to our recent snow.
As we head into this week, upstream blocking will begin to break down and open the door for the pattern to progress. Another oscillation, know as the Eastern Pacific Oscillation (EPO), will become positive as the pattern progresses. This will create a faster zonal flow or forward east to west motion of the jet stream over the Pacific which will allow for milder air to make it across the Pacific and into the Twin Tiers. This setup will lift the jet stream to our north allowing for that milder air to move in, but that is not the end of the change.
Also, we will likely be entering an unsettled pattern with increased chances for showers and even thunderstorms! High pressure, which will settle in the Central US starting today, will move towards the Eastern US Wednesday and then towards Bermuda by Thursday. With the clockwise flow of high pressure, we will see a warm and moist flow. This will allow low pressure to ride along that flow and towards the Twin Tiers as we head into Thursday, Friday, and into early next week. Also, this will increase dew points and we will likely see stickier conditions as storms approach. The track of low pressure and strength of high pressure will have major implications on rainfall amounts. If low pressure tracks over the Twin Tiers, we will see heavier rain both Thursday and Friday. If low pressure slides to our south or north, it will mean less in terms of heavy rain and more in terms of scattered shower activity.
We will keep you updated as the pattern progresses this week.
