(WENY) - Health insurers in New York are now required to cover fertility services despite someone's sexual orientation or gender identity. The Department of Financial Services announced new guidance Tuesday.

Those who are not able to conceive due to their sexual orientation and gender identity often pay 6 to 12 months out-of-pocket expenses for infertility treatments. These treatments include procedures such as inseminations or testing. With the new guidance, those people will be protected.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said "every New Yorker regardless of sexual orientation or gender identify should have the same opportunity to conceive a family, and we must do everything we can to ensure cost is not a barrier."
