Tompkins County restaurant severely damaged in fire

6/21 UPDATE: Fire officials from Varna Volunteer Fire Department tell WENY News there were no injuries to people nor animals during Friday's fire. It started in the front left corner of the building, which is the dining area. It did not make its way to the porch, officials say. The cause of the fire is now under State Fire Investigators.

The second floor collapsed on the inside due to the fire. VVFD officials say it does not appear to be worth repairing due to the extent of damage and will most likely be considered a total loss. There are five (5) units on the floor above the restaurant with one shared bathroom. The sole tenant of the building reportedly contacted the fire department and was able to make it out okay.

Mutual aid from seven (7) neighboring agencies responded, after Varna VFD received the first call of the blaze shortly before 2:30 a.m. Mutual aid was on scene until about 9:30 a.m. when the bulk of the fire was out. Varna FD stayed on scene until after 5:00 p.m.

The street at 356 was closed down between Turkey Hill and Baker Hill until after mutual aid left. At this time, VVFD tells WENY News no foul play is suspected.

WENY News will continue to follow any further developments in this story.
