CORNING, N.Y. (WENY)- Monday marked the 13th day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The City of Corning showed its support for its sister city in Ukraine, LVIV.

The City of LVIV has been Corning's sister for decades and is safe for now. Monday, the City Council wanted to show they stand with their counterpart on the other side of the world.

"The mission of Sister City International is to promote national and international peace and security," the City Clerk said.

In a unanimous vote on Monday evening, the Corning City Council voted in favor of the resolution to stand in solidarity with LVIV. LVIV was chosen as Corning's Sister City back in 1987. The agreement was chartered under Sister Cities International, a non for profit founded by former President Dwight Eisenhower.

The relationship has been more than thirty years between LVIV and Corning.  Now with the current invasion of Ukraine, the City of Corning is deeply concerned and expressed support and solidarity with their sister city.

"A quarter of my family comes from LVIV and another quarter from KYIV so they are in the middle of it now historically. I appreciate you giving me the opportunity to be the sponsor and for the thoughtful words," Councilmember Marshall Hyde said.

A resident who attended the meeting, expressed the people of Ukraine appreciate the show of support from Corning. 

"I've had a couple of emails from our friends in Ukraine there're very short thanking us for our thoughts and prayers," Rose Ann said.

Mayor Boland also thinking of the Mayor of LVIV and says he reached out to him a few weeks ago but understands why he hasn't heard back yet. 

"I take that as an indication that he has more concerning things to do than to respond to me but I assure you I will be sending this resolution to him."
