ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- Everyone continues to mourn the mass killing of Black New Yorkers in Buffalo, New York. People in Elmira gathered together to speak out against gun violence and white supremacy in the Empire State.

Candidate for Chemung County's 11th Legislative District, Tanisha Logan-Lattimore, believes there needs to be a stop to hate in the Empire State.

“Your voice, your name, your character, whatever you have, throw it into this so that we can fix this, so that I don't live in fear, so that my children don't live in fear, so that no one has to live in fear,” she said.

Candidates for Elmira's local office and community leaders spoke out against racial injustice and the mass killing by a self-proclaimed white supremacist in Buffalo. They grieved, held one another, and discussed solutions for the safety of Elmira citizens.

Candidate for Chemung County's 9th Legislative District, Arthur L. Jones, spoke at the gathering. He said the ideologies that led to what happened in Buffalo can happen anywhere.

“Elmira is a very good place, filled with good people and we just want to make sure that the message is clear that we want to do everything possible to prevent what happened in Buffalo last weekend from ever happening here,” he said.

After the mass shooting in Buffalo, Logan-Lattimore fears for her family.

“It does really scare me because it could be any of my daughter-in-law...step-daughter that has mixed children...they mixed children could have been targeted, any of my sons...I have eight sons...and it's just a scary ordeal that we need to address,” she said.

The Chemung County Democratic Committee will hold more events to stop violence in the Southern Tier in the future.
