Corning Community College softball ready for another opportunity at nationals
CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) - After capturing their second straight Region III Title, the Corning Community College softball team is ready to compete in the National Tournament once again.
Corning is the 2-seed in this year's NJCAA Division III National Tournament. They will play 7th-seed St. Cloud Tech in the first round on Wednesday at 2 PM at Carrier Park in DeWitt. The Cyclones are 38-3 this season and are riding a 12-game win streak entering nationals.
This is familiar territory for CCC after making it all the way to last year's National Championship game before falling to Rock Valley, who is the top seed once again in this year's tournament.
The Red Barons are thrilled for this opportunity once again.
"We don't duplicate, we just bring new ones in and these girls really stepped it up and we had some holes from last year's team. We didn't graduate a lot, but we graduated some key people" said Head Coach, Stacy Johnson. "Our goal was to win a Regional Championship and get a chance to play in Syracuse again, so anything after here is just icing on the cake."
"Some of us know what it feels like to be on that field, some of us don't, and I think that'll give us a little bit of an edge that we do have people that have come back and played on that field and played in that atmosphere before" said inflielder Grace Vondracek. "It's truly so much fun to be there, but we just have to stay together, play our game. Once we get there, it's a brand new slate and it's chapter three of our book, it's nationals. We're ready to work, we're ready to go."
