CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) - It's been a special high school career for Corning's Atalyia Rijo. The Hawks' softball standout is set to join the Arkansas Razorback program next season, but she continues to be recognized for her performances for Corning as she has been named the Gatorade New York Softball Player of the Year.

This award recognizes the performances of the student-athlete on the field, but also high standards academically and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

This season, Rijo helped the Hawks to an 18-2 record where they competed in another Section IV Class AA Championship game. Rijo had a batting average of .585 with 5 triples, 7 home runs, 21 RBI's, and 43 runs scored. Atalyia is a three-time First-Team All-State selection, she was selected for the PGF Futures All-American game, and was invited to play for the Dominican Republic National Team. Atalyia is also the 8th-ranked prospect in the country in the class of 2022 by Extra Inning Softball.

Rijo has maintained an A average in the classroom and has also volunteered at the food bank and elementary school reading initiatives.

Atalyia is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Softball Player of the Year award which will be announced this month.
