HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- The L is hosting a Homeless Awareness Fundraiser in Horseheads, tomorrow. Organizer Adam Bunce recognizes the issue of homelessness in Elmira is getting worse. He is trying to come up with solutions to remedy the issue.

Bunce said he is getting the community together to hear his plan. Bunce thought The L, an entertainment venue, would be the perfect location for the fundraiser.

“We're partnering with a group of ladies called the Sisters Keepers, that I've been working with, to do homelessness awareness for about six months, now,” he said.

Bunce is a candidate for the 9th District County Legislature. Bunce said he is running because he wants to do more for his community. He, and the Sisters Keepers, have invited the founder of House of Mercy, a homeless shelter based in Rochester. He said founder Sister Grace has come up with a plan to help the homeless people in Elmira.

“We have an actual program in place with people that deal with homelessness in Rochester...they're driving all the way down to tell us what they're doing there and they're having great success with,” he said. “We're hoping to implement that here in Elmira and Chemung County...just to show people what we have been doing.”

Bunce hosted a homelessness awareness outreach in February of this year. The event raised at least $5,000 for homeless people, along with hundreds of donations of food, clothing, and toiletries. He said this problem is not normal for a small city like Elmira.

“We shouldn't have people sleeping under bridges...people should be sleeping, at the very least, inside...under a roof...not on sidewalks, not under bridges,” he said. “We need to do more.”

Bunce said he hopes the community comes to the free event to listen and share ideas on how to help people experiencing homelessness.

“Some of these ideas and options that we have on the table...again...we'll do our part to start to tackle this issue of homelessness right here in Elmira and Chemung County,” he said.

The event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. at The L, located at 116 Breesport Road in Horseheads.
