BIG FLAT, N.Y. (WENY)--The Chemung County legislature voted unanimously in favor to approve funds to give the Harris Hill Runway a facelift, thanks to the American Rescue Plan Act.

The county plans to invest about $98,000 of the American Rescue funds to repave the Harris Hill landing strip in Big Flats.

The original budget for this project was $250,000 however due to the rising costs of asphalt and the condition of the runway, the Legislature requested to use ARP money.

Harris Hill is the soaring capital of America and the county wants to keep that distinguished title. They are hoping by updating the landing strip, it will bring in competitions from all over the country.

The runway hasn't been updated in several years. Legislator Tom Sweet in the third district says it's long overdue.

"It's in need of repair! We are hoping soaring competition will come back to Elmira. And up on Harris Hill, it will bring in a lot of people with sailplanes and they will stay in our hotels and eat at our restaurants and just enjoy the beauty of Chemung County and bring in their revenue stream," Sweet said.

Sweet added Harris hill is a gem and it will enhance tourism for Chemung County. The public works department will schedule the re-pavement work in the near future.
