CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- Students from the GST BOCES STEM Academy were invited into their new academic home Thursday morning at Corning Community College.

The GST BOCES STEM Academy has called 2634 Goff Rd. in Corning it's home for the past five years. In that time, they worked with Corning Community College to provide students with college-level courses. CCC and STEM students celebrated the entire Academy's move to the Spencer Hill campus Thursday morning with a ribbon cutting outside the Commons building.

“College professors have come down to Goff Road to teach our younger students, and then our older students take college classes right here on campus. Kristen Miller, Principal of the GST STEM Academy, said. “Now, there will be no traveling for those college professors. All of our students are right here, and all students have access to college classes from day one.”

Students can start with BOCES as early as 9th grade. CCC President Bill Mullaney says the STEM Academy program kills two birds with one stone in that they will simultaneously receive a high school diploma and associate's degree from CCC.

“We've always recognized the importance of having the college build strong relationships with local high schools,” Mullaney said. “The idea came to strengthen that relationship, expand it, have our faculty teach students, and give them the opportunity to earn a college degree while they're getting their high school diploma.”

STEM Academy’s Director of Career and Technical Education Ron Sherburne says the move is a game changer in providing resources that get students ready for the working world. He says the STEM Academy's move is the first of many developments the partnership between both institutions will create for BOCES students.

“We want to keep growing this opportunity in the region,” Sherburne said. “They're getting a college education paid for and an experience they wouldn't get anywhere else, so our goal is to keep going.”

The old school building on Goff Road is owned by Corning Community College. They now have plans to sell the property. More information about the GST STEM Academy can be found online.
