CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- The Days of Incandescence will return to Corning for another year of family-friendly celebrations just in time for the Halloween season.

The annual multi-day celebration recognizes the event in 1880 Corning when Thomas Edison sent someone from his company to Corning Flint Glass Works for a special type of glass to use for his incandescent lamps. 

Taking place each October and culminating on Halloween, this year’s 12-day celebration will feature: 

Themed Farmer’s Markets 
October 20 and 27
10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Riverfront Centennial Park

Pick up your freshly picked veggies and other local treats at Corning's last two Farmer's Markets of the season. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume, especially a period piece from the 1880s. Newsies will also be handing out the special commemorative 1880 newspapers.

Guided Historic Walking Tours
Tour Dates - October 21, 22, 23, 28 and 29
7:00 p.m.
Centerway Square

Beginning and ending in Centerway Square, residents from 1880s Corning lead visitors through Corning’s Gaffer District. Additional tours will take place on Oct. 22 and 29 at 3 p.m.

Archibald’s Libation Crawl
Thursday, October 27 
5:00 to 9:00 p.m. 

This adult-friendly event allows you to engage with sundry characters from Corning’s past. Sample local wine and craft beverages at various locations throughout the Gaffer District as local actors bring a bit of 1880 Corning to life. Solve clues for a chance to win a prize.

The Art of the Cemetery Tour
Friday, October 28
5:30 to 8:00 p.m. 
Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes

Explore the history and symbolism behind gravestone art with this private tour of local cemeteries. The tour ends with a tasting of locally crafted adult beverages and a discussion of the history of the Tavern in the Historic 1796 Benjamin Patterson Inn. Guests should feel comfortable standing and walking short distances on uneven ground to join this tour and are encouraged to bring their own lanterns and flashlights, as it will get darker as the tour progresses. 

Boarding begins at 5:30 p.m. at Heritage Village. Registration is required at earts.com. Tickets cost $10 per seat.  

All Hallows Event 
Saturday, October 29
12:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes 

This one-day event centers around the supernatural tale The Legend of the Gathers, in which a mysterious boy blows the first glass bulb and ghosts arrive each October to help get light out into the world.

The legend was made into a picture book, and visitors have the chance to meet the illustrator and author of the book themselves.

This event will also feature craft beer tastings with Liquid Shoes Brewing, pumpkin painting and free samples of farm-fresh apples and cider. Demonstrations will also be taking place for hearth cooking, spinning and blacksmithing.  

Horse & Wagon Rides

Centerway Square

Guests will have the chance to experience Corning from the back of a wagon. Rides will leave Centerway Square in front of Old World Café. There is a small fee that is included. 

The Days of Incandescence Celebration 
Saturday, October 29 
4:00 to 8:00 p.m. 
Riverfront Centennial Park and Centerway Square

Celebrate the 1880s with live music, vendors, activities, walking tours, a Jack-o-Lantern Contest and more. Circus professional "Nate the Great" will perform a special juggling act, horse and carriage rides will be available at Centerway Square prior to 4 p.m., and a Jack-O-Lantern Lighting and Carving Contest will take place a 5 p.m. The community is invited to carve jack-o-lanterns at home, and then bring them to the park to illuminate the Corning night sky.

Awaken The Spirits Ghost Hunt

7:00 to 10:00 p.m.
Heritage Village of the Southern Finger Lakes 

This special three-hour Halloween Ghost Hunt makes you engage with the other side as you take part in a hunt led by Investigators from the Paranormal Association of the Southern Tier (P.A.S.T.). Registration is required here.
