HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) - The New York Collegiate Baseball League is coming to Horseheads. An announcement was made on Tuesday that the Mansfield Destroyers are relocating to Horseheads and will rebrand as the Horseheads Hitmen starting in 2023.

President of the team, Larry Gill made the announcement, revealing the new logo and uniforms. The team played in Mansfield for the last four years, and Gill has been the President of the organization since January 2022. The team will play at the Babe Ruth field in Horseheads, and Gill says many upgrades are coming to the field. The coaching staff includes Larry Gill Jr., Sean Eighmey, and Jeremy Gulich.

Gill added they will do a carload price for admission of $5, and they are excited to be able to play at night to give families an opportunity to come out and enjoy a ballgame.

"I spoke with Nate Nagel from the village to start. He was on board from the first word that I said I wanted to bring the team in," said Gill. "I've had nothing but great support from the others in the area so that's the main reason why I came here knowing the rich history of baseball in the Horseheads area from little league, Babe Ruth, high school, college, major leagues."

Gill is also looking forward to having another summer with local student-athletes competing for the team.

"I have I believe nine or ten guys signed already to come and play in 2023 from the local area. I believe five of them played for us last year which is a great core group to have to start the year. There's nothing better than having locals able to showcase their talent in the area," he said.

The team is expected to start the NYCBL season in early June and will wrap up in the last week of July.
