CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) - It's a big weekend for the Corning volleyball team. The Hawks are set to make the trip to Glens Falls for the State Semifinals with hopes to advance to Sunday and bring home a state title.

Corning will compete in pool play for the NYSPHSAA Class AA semifinal round. Opening ceremonies at Cool Insuring Arena are at 7:45 AM on Saturday. The Hawks play first at 8:30 AM against Shenendehowa, followed by matchups against Massapequa and Lancaster.

This has been a special run for Corning. The Hawks upset top seed and undefeated Ithaca to capture their first section title since 2016, followed by a Sub-Regional win against Pine Bush, and a win against Mamaroceck to capture a Regional title.

The growth of the team over the last few weeks has been significant and going into this weekend, they feel they have a shot.

"I think that if you would've asked us at the beginning of the season, I'm not sure we'd say we were here," said Head Coach Barb Smith. "We are a completely different team right now, playing better each time. We've bonded and have just become closer and working harder together. They're just figuring things out and they're just playing amazing right now."

Smith discussed the team's preparation entering the biggest weekend of the season.

"We're going to run through what we normally do. We watch a lot of game film. A lot of these girls are smart with game IQ so they know what to look for, they know what to do, they make a plan and they execute" she said.

"We've just got to play as hard as we can. We don't want to be done playing so we just have to push as hard as we can" said senior, Olivia Keegan. "I would love to win obviously, but it's just so exciting to play in the first place and finish off my senior year with a win."

"It's very special to us," said senior, Jenna DiNardo. "Ever since that Sectional game, we've just all come together and since then we've been wanting it a lot."

"I couldn't even imagine it. I'm already feeling up here and I just want to keep feeling that way so if we come home with this I think it will be one of the top best feelings ever" DiNardo added.
