(WENY) -- With holiday shopping unofficially kicking off this week, shoppers should be on high alert when looking for that special gift online. Tioga County Public Health Educator Katie Wait says to pay extra close attention to all of your financial accounts if you're shopping online.

“Make sure that if the deal seems too good to be true, maybe avoid that, especially through text message and email,” Wait said, adding, “It's crazy what people can do now.”

Wait urges people to avoid suspicious links, text messages, phone calls, and emails -- and make sure any security software they have is up to date. She also recommends shoppers look for indicators of a secure site before entering credit card numbers, passwords, and additional personal information.
