ITHACA, N.Y. (WENY) - After nominating acting Police Chief John Joly for the position of Ithaca Police Chief last week, mayor elect Laura Lewis has decided to reopen the search.

According to Lewis, a number of colleagues disagreed with her recommendation of Joly to the post. Lewis said she will soon announce a plan for a reopened search for the next chief of the Ithaca Police Department.

Joly was named acting Police Chief in the spring of 2021 when Chief Dennis Nayor announced his retirement.

The joint statement from Lewis and Joly can be seen below. The press release did not express the concerns of the common council regarding Joly.

WENY News will follow up on this story with additional information.
