HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Amy's Sunshine Center is quite literally turning into a sunny spot for families in Horseheads. After two months of hard work, the daycare is finally open for business.

“The first week has been crazy,” said Amy Kehr, the owner of Amy’s Sunshine Center. “We've had so many kids back, all of our staff back, and the excitement through the hallways...and the chaos and everything. It's just been a blessing.”

Kehr was able to get connected with concerned parents at the end of November of 2022, when the Chemung Valley Early Learning center announced their doors would be closing. After the closure, Kehr knew she had to hit the ground running. Kehr worked with previous staff members and parents to expand her business that is based in Painted Post, get proper licensing approved, and fill the rooms with as many kids as possible.

“We've been working so hard over the past couple of months and to see everything come to's beyond a gift,” she said.

But there is still work to be done. Kehr said nearly 160 children can be accommodated for at her center, and toddlers and younger kids are already flooding the hallways. She said she wants to accommodate more school-aged kids, as well. There are about 60 spots for older children that can still be filled at the center.

“We need to fill up our school-aged program...the more school-ages we get, the better off we'll be here,” she said. “Otherwise, everything is wonderful.”

Amy's Sunshine Center's opening day was Monday. With four days down, Kehr has seen more smiles that she can count.

“I have seen the kids going through an adjustment period, as we would expect but overall, the children are happy to be back,” she said. “We have a lot of new faces, as well, and these children are just bonding with our staff here so tremendously and it's beautiful to watch.”

Kehr said she is grateful for the Horseheads community and the overwhelming amount of support she has received throughout this entire process. She added, she hopes to spread sunshine and happiness at her childcare center.
