BIG FLATS, N.Y. (WENY) -- Police have identified the victim of a Big Flats stabbing on Friday that left one man in critical condition. Joseph Hartford, 29, remains hospitalized at Robert Packer Hospital but has been upgraded to stable condition.

On January 20th at a home on Burkeshire drive in Big Flats police 34-year-old named Theodore Swan stabbed Hartford in the chest several times. Following hours of negotiations, swan surrendered to authorities after barricading himself inside his home. The state had to deploy a robot and fire gas canisters into the home before Swan surrendered.

Officials still have not said how the two men knew each other, and a motive for the attack remains unclear. As of now Swan remains in the Chemung county jail second degree attempted murder charges. Swan’s bail was listed at $250,000 cash.

WENY news will have continuing coverage of this case as it continues to develop.
