Athens' Luke Horton signs to play football and baseball at St. John Fisher University
ATHENS, P.A. (WENY) - Athens senior, Luke Horton is set to compete at the collegiate level, and he is getting the opportunity to play two sports.
Horton signed on Tuesday to play football and baseball for St. John Fisher University.
Horton was second in the NTL last fall in receiving yards and touchdowns, racking up 665 yards and finding the endzone 9 times. Last spring when he played baseball for Sayre, Horton owned a .467 batting average where he recorded 28 hits with 32 RBIs and 2 home runs. He was also a standout on the mound going 7-0 with a 0.83 ERA.
Horton says he is not set on a major yet but is considering Education or Business and he will make that decision soon. But after putting pen to paper, he is looking forward to this special opportunity.
"I really think Fisher stood out when I went there for a visit and met with the coaches. They made me feel like I was already part of the family" said Horton. "Two sports are huge that I could do both there and they just kind of rolled out the red carpet and made me feel special so I know I'll be comfortable there. I think if I put in a lot of work this summer in both football and baseball, I'll have a shot to compete right off the jump.
Horton also took some time to recognize everyone who has supported him along this journey.
"I have an amazing family and an awesome group of friends," Horton said. "My coaches can be here and I wanted to shout out my old Sayre coaches Coach Vanduzer and Coach Gorman. I'm really thankful for them and all of the memories I can make with them."
Horton joins a St. John Fisher baseball program that captured the Empire 8 Conference Championship finishing 31-16 overall and 18-2 in conference play. The St. John Fisher football team finished the 2022 season 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the Empire 8.
