Waverly's Isaiah Bretz signs to play football for St. John Fisher University
WAVERLY, N.Y. (WENY) - It was a special day for Waverly's, Isaiah Bretz as the senior wide receiver and linebacker signed to play football at St. John Fisher University.
Isaiah played a major part in the Wolverines' success, especially this season, helping lead the team to a Section IV title. In his senior year, Isaiah caught 30 passes for 223 yards and four touchdowns. Defensively, he tallied 86 tackles, 34 of them solo. Bretz forced two fumbles and had one fumble recovery and one interception.
He will be joined by teammate Nate Delill at St. John Fisher, as well as Athens standouts Mason Lister and Luke Horton.
Bretz plans to major in sport management at St. John Fisher, and he is ready to take the next step.
"Just walking there, getting on the campus and everything, it felt like home and everything like that, and the people there, you go up to them, they talk to you and they're all just so nice, and the coaching staff I want to thank them and knowing that I've got Nate coming with me and the two Athens kids, Mason and Luke. Competing with them and playing against them, I know that we're going to do good up there" said Bretz.
"I've got to hit the weight room and I'm running track this year instead of doing baseball. I want to try and get faster and I'm going to do Coach Rick's workouts over the summer to help me out" he added. "So mostly speed, and I want to get a little bigger strength-wise but I also have to learn the game of football more than I already know it."
Bretz says his favorite memory with the Wolverines is beating Chenango Forks for the Section IV title. As he gets ready for the next level, he took a moment to reflect on his time at Waverly.
"I want to thank my family, friends, and especially the coaching staff because we have so many coaches that played at the next level and they know what they're talking about and they got us there."
