ELMIRA, N.Y. (WENY) -- In light of LGBTQ+ Health Awareness Week, the Southern Finger Lakes Pride and UniCorning wanted to celebrate. People gathered together to watch two plays and converse with one another at the Elmira Little Theatre.

It was a chance to come together.

Mitchell Smith, a member of UniCorning, helped organize the event. Smith wanted to create a safe, inclusive space for people to talk about what they need from the healthcare community.

“I think community is definitely important,” he said. “We all need and want to see ourselves...the recognition and I think the visibility is important.”

Smith said that trying to be visible, when talking about LGBTQ+ health, does not always feel safe. He wants to see more events where people can come together to build each other up.
